With the acquisition of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company in 1998, Lindt & Sprüngli secured a second pillar on the US market with a prestigious American brand.
Incorporated in 1852, Ghirardelli has the richest heritage of any American chocolate company. During the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, founder Domingo Ghirardelli shrewdly discovered that the exhausted miners were starving for treats and needed something to spend their gold dust on. Since its historic beginnings, the traditional company has been dedicated to the manufacturing of high-quality premium chocolate, and therefore makes an ideal fit with the Lindt & Sprüngli brand portfolio. The most famous products in the brand portfolio of Ghirardelli are the popular SQUARES which were developed in 1999. Meanwhile in numerous variants available, the fine chocolate squares with the liquid core take almost every taste of discerning consumers. In San Francisco, the old chocolate factory on Ghirardelli Square is now one of the prominent sights of the city, on a par with the famous Golden Gate bridge.
